Senior Patent Agent

Carlos Zuniga, Ph.D.

Biography

Carlos A. Zuniga, Ph.D., serves as a Patent Agent in the areas of chemistry, pharmaceuticals, polymer science, materials science, and nanotechnology.

Dr. Zuniga drafts patent applications, prosecutes U.S. patent applications (drafts responses, amendments, and appeal and reply briefs), and corresponds with foreign associates to guide the prosecution of foreign applications.

Dr. Zuniga graduated magna cum laude from Florida International University with a B.Sc. degree in Chemistry in 2005 and obtained his D.Phil. (Ph.D.) in Chemistry from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2011. During his graduate studies under the guidance of Prof. Seth R. Marder his work focused on the development and synthesis of new high triplet energy organic small molecules for use as hosts for transition metal-based guest phosphors in efficient phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), as well as incorporating these groups into solution-processable and crosslinkable polymer-based derivatives for developing more economical device fabrication solutions. Following the conclusion of his Ph.D. studies, Dr. Zuniga was a Henry and Camille Dreyfus Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the supervision of Prof. Timothy M. Swager until 2014. During his time at MIT, Dr. Zuniga focused his efforts on the development of functional graphene-based materials with various applications including gas sensing, energy storage and the stabilization of carbon-based materials in high ionic strength environments for applications in petroleum reservoir research.

Dr. Zuniga's professional experience includes a wide range of research disciplines in the areas of organic and polymer chemistry, as well as in the areas of materials science and nanotechnology. Over the years he has presented his research at various ACS, MRS and international conferences (including the 9th International Symposium on Functional p-Electron Systems and a Gordon Research Conference) and has co-authored numerous publications in top journals such as Advanced Materials, J. Materials Chemistry, Macromolecules and Organic Electronics, including a highly cited review article in Chemistry of Materials. He is also a co-inventor on seven patents resulting directly from the work completed during his Ph.D studies.
